GC-FSU Agreement Provides for Baccalaureate Partnership in Adventure Sports Management
Garrett College and its largest transfer partner, Frostburg State University, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishing the foundation for a collaborative Bachelor of Science degree program in Adventure Sports Management. The agreement also provides students with a clear pathway from an associate degree to a baccalaureate degree, utilizing the resources of both institutions.

Frostburg State University to Close Cambridge Hall, Relocate Students
Frostburg State University has decided to close Cambridge Hall, a residence hall, following moisture problems that developed following mechanical upgrades over the summer. The 154 students who reside in the residence hall will be transferred to other campus housing.

FSU Student Awarded Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Wildlife Leadership Award
Josiah Freese, a senior Wildlife and Fisheries student at Frostburg State University, is a winner of the 2018 Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation’s Wildlife Leadership Award. The program awards a $3,000 scholarship to college juniors and seniors chosen for their leadership ability, dedication to wildlife conservation and scholastic achievements. Freese, of Mount Airy, Md., is one of only 12 students nationwide to receive the award, including a one-year membership to RMEF.

Frostburg State University Students Muscling Their Way to Collegiate Powerlifting Championships
Ingrid Braun has a lot of weight on her shoulders these days. About 300 pounds worth, actually. Deadlifting 292 pounds at a regional meet sent the FSU wildlife biology and fisheries major to the USA Powerlifting Collegiate Nationals at Texas A and M University in April. There she topped the 300 mark, deadlifting 303 pounds.

Frostburg State Researchers: Lyme Disease Is Here and the Public Can Help
With Western Maryland back in bloom, tick season is here, and regular tick checks are more important than ever for people and pets in the region. Frostburg State University researchers have been studying the tick population in Rocky Gap State Park in recent years. Worryingly, 25 percent of the ticks they collected in 2016 tested positive for Lyme disease.

Primary Election Candidate Forums to Air on FSU’s WFWM Beginning May 21
WFWM 91.9 FM, public radio from Frostburg State University, will broadcast the 2018 Primary Election Candidate Forums for Cumberland Mayor, Allegany County Board of Education and Maryland House of Delegates District 1C in the coming weeks. The forums were hosted by the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce and moderated by Chamber Executive Director Stu Czapski. WFWM and Allegany College of Maryland recorded the forums.

Dr. Amy Branam Armiento, associate professor of English at Frostburg State University, has been elected president of the Poe Studies Association (PSA). Since 1972, PSA has supported the exchange of information on the life, works, times and influence of Edgar Allan Poe. Armiento will serve a two-year term as president.

Frostburg State University Hosts Model United Nations
Frostburg State University hosted a Model United Nations activity on April 10, providing local high school students the opportunity to participate in a simulation of the United Nations Security Council. Students formed delegations representing countries from around the world and debated issues of war, peace and international relations. FSU’s Model United Nations is run by FSU students and faculty, with Dr. Stephen Twing from the Department of Political Science mediating the discussion.

Frostburg State University Students, Middle-Schoolers to Speak to Astronaut Alumnus in Space, Join Science Activities
On Monday, April 9, students from Frostburg State University and local middle schools will have the opportunity to speak with Frostburg alumnus and NASA astronaut Ricky Arnold, who is in the early weeks of his six-month mission. The conversation will take place via a live downlink from the International Space Station, scheduled to begin at 9:55 a.m. The 20-minute downlink can be viewed on NASA TV via NASA.gov, or through links on FSU social media.

FSU Faculty Member Jason Speights Honored With USM Regents Award for Mentoring
Dr. Jason Speights, director of Frostburg State University’s Multimedia Learning Center (MLC) and Planetarium and assistant professor of physics, has been awarded the Regents’ Faculty Award for Excellence in Mentoring, the highest honor that the University of Maryland Board of Regents bestows to recognize exemplary faculty achievement. He will be honored at the April 20 meeting of the board.

Frostburg State University Student’s Maryland-Themed Mission Patch to Fly to International Space Station
Astronaut Ricky Arnold isn’t the only piece of Frostburg State that is rendezvousing with the International Space Station this year. A mission patch designed by FSU art and design major Donovan Carter will be on its way to space in June. Carter won the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program Mission Design Competition with his Maryland-inspired patch. The patch represents the University System of Maryland in SSEP Mission 12.

Singh Named Dean of Frostburg State University College of Business
Dr. Sudhir Singh has been named the new dean of Frostburg State University’s College of Business by Provost Elizabeth Throop. Singh has served as interim dean of the College of Business since 2015 and was associate dean from 2010 to 2015. He joined FSU in 1992, with a teaching focus on finance. He has also served as director of the College of Business Center for Leadership Development since 2011.
