Frostburg State University Receives Bronze Seal for Excellence in Student Voter Engagement
Frostburg State University has received a bronze seal from the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge for achieving a student voting rate of 55.7 percent in the 2016 national election, an increase of 9.6 percentage points over 2012’s 46.1 percent. The Bronze Seal was awarded to colleges and universities that achieved a rate between 50 and 59 percent.

Frostburg State University College of Education Nationally Accredited
Frostburg State University’s College of Education recently received accreditation for an additional seven years, based on the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) standards. NCATE’s performance-based accreditation system for teacher preparation ensures that teacher candidates are prepared to make a difference in P-12 student learning.

Frostburg State Accepted for Chapter of America’s Oldest, Most-Selective Honor Society
Frostburg State University has been accepted to form a chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, America’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Founded in 1897, the society inducts about 30,000 members from 300-plus colleges and universities each year. Frostburg’s chapter will initiate its first members in spring of 2018.

Frostburg State University to Celebrate 151st Commencement Ceremony
Frostburg State University will celebrate student achievements of its fall 2017 graduating class with the 151st Commencement ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 19. The ceremony for the colleges of Business, Education, Liberal Arts and Sciences will take place in the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center’s Main Arena at 2 p.m.

Robert A. Norr Memorial Scholarship “Sealed the Deal” for Recent Frostburg State Grad
Calli Feudale’s career is built on making people who face difficult circumstances live a rewarding life. Yet, she would not be a 2017 Frostburg State University Recreation and Parks graduate if it weren’t for others giving back. Feudale, 22, of Frederick, Md., received the Robert A. Norr Memorial Scholarship in 2016, awarded to a FSU recreation and parks major who studies therapeutic recreation and exemplifies the character and spirit of the late FSU student Bob Norr, among other criteria.

Larry Hogan announced a state investment of $300,000 to establish a new Office of Regional Development and Engagement (RDE) at Frostburg State University. “To further encourage economic development in Western Maryland, today I’m pleased to announce that, in next year’s budget, we will invest $300,000 to establish a new economic development office at Frostburg State University to help capitalize on the research of their faculty and to partner with local businesses to grow the Western Maryland economy,” Hogan told the crowd gathered at Cumberland’s Historic City Center.

As I'm sure many of you were, I have been greatly troubled by the news and images coming out of the University of Virginia, and especially by the hate-inspired violence that resulted in injuries and loss of life. I urge you to keep those affected in your thoughts. It is both ironic and disturbing that white supremacists chose to stage their rally at the university founded by the person who, despite his own flaws, wrote, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal," for it is the diversity of background, ethnicity, and ideas inspired by Thomas Jefferson's words that has made our nation great.
